Regal in appearance and possessed with the legendary fleetness of foot, the deer is viewed with the highest regard in Wixárika (Huichol) culture. Legend has it that it was a blue deer spirit, Kauyumari, that took the wixaritari pilgrims to the sacred land of Wirikuta, where they first found the peyote. This guardian spirit is rendered in a hand-carved paper mache sculpture adorned with intricate bead detailing including the Father Sun, ruler of the heavens and bringer of light to our world.
