Huichol Art from high in the Sierra Madre Mountains

Own a Unique & Authentic Piece of Mexico

The Wixáritari people, best known to the world as Huichol, are one of the most ancient indigenous cultures in the world (dating back over 15,000 years). With no written language, they use pictographs to pass down the stories of their people. Tierra Huichol visits the different Wixarika tribes in the Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico to work with the local artisans. We provide the artists with tools, beeswax, and colorful glass beads--all of the materials they use to create each masterpiece, decorated with the symbols and history of the wixarika culture.

In pre-Hispanic mythology, it was said that the Aztecs received a message from the God of the Sun and War, Huitzilopochtli (blue hummingbird) to leave Aztlan, the place where they lived until then because it was necessary to find new land. In that place, they would find riches and they would gain power over other peoples. Huitzilopochtli sentenced that that promised land would be where an eagle was found on top of a cactus, devouring a snake, the Wixarikas beaded and decorate a handmade paper mache to symbolize that historic moment on this great sculpture.
